Flatcat/Five Days Off
Split

ESR007
MCD

Released:
December
2003

This is already the third release from Flatcat on Eye Spy records. Last year
was amazing for these guys, they rocked every stage and have set new ambitions for the next years. One of the goals was to release a high quality
production... They hit Motormusic Studios with producer Raf Roesems and the result is impressive. Nikolas Vanderveken from Janez Detd. is doing the backings. This CD is a co-production with Funtime records and has also four Five Days Off songs on the tracklist, together with Flatcat one of the biggest punkrockbands in Belgium.

I Am No Hero (B): Damn! Eyespy and Funtime records sure hit the jackpot with this one. The two biggest punkrock labels in Belgium have cooperated to release a split of the two best Belgian punkrock bands (yeah I don’t like JANEZ DETD, blow me!) and both bands delivered their best work to date so far. First band on the split are FLATCAT who recorded their stuff in the famous Motormusic studios (.CALIBRE, CAMDEN, …) which is kinda extraordinary for a punkrockband on an independent label but the result shows. Their catchy punkrock tunes sounds really clean without losing any punch. The punkrock tunes they play are perfect anthemic mostly poppy tunes that might as well have been released on Fat Wreck even though they don’t directly rip off any of those bands. Their songwriting skills are quite refined which results in great catchy tunes that makes you wonder why a crapband like NAILPIN ends up on a major label while these guys hardly get the exposure they so deserve (except in their own area where they are quite huge. and Brazil, go figure). Hopefully their contribution to this split-CD will turn the tide for them. And since a split needs at least two bands, here’s the next band called FIVE DAYS OFF. These guys are more well known in Belgium than FLATCAT. At least that’s what I think going by all the FDO shirts I see punkrock kiddies wearing. I can see why. They play melodic rather fast paced punkrock which is a whole deal less poppy than FLATCAT. I wasn’t to wild about their last full length but it seems that these guys have evolved quite a lot. It sounds like they really thought out the music and brought new ideas to the table. They sound more aggressive this time around. It even sounds like they listened to some hardcore records lately and incorporated that into their sound without losing their sense for melody which makes their sound more aggressive without being abrasive. There’s even some gnarly backup screams and gang vocals. But along with the more aggressive sound it also seems like they put a lot of time and thought in the melodies too which is a good measurement of the progress they booked. In that way it kinda makes this FDO’s ‘American Paradox’ even though it isn’t a full length. Great stuff even though FLATCAT are my favourite on this split (I’m just a sucker for poppy tunes I guess). This is a great split CD and a great effort of the two labels involved. And it comes in a digipack with a fantastic layout. Thank you Funtime! Thank you Eyespy!
