Bullet Magazine (B):
Didn't see this one coming! The longest living and
hence most succesful Belgian oldschool band is back
with 5 new songs, with a new style and on a new label.
Oldschool is still on the base of these songs, but
they turned more rocking and punkier. The singer's
high pitched voice still makes it unappreciable for
16-year old Blink fans, but they definitely building
bridges! The excellent lay-out job by Mr. Famooze
and the good sound on here make this a very respectable
farewell CDep. Thumbs Down never really got the appreciation
they deserved, but let's hope they get back in the
game soon with some new projects to make it right!
Rif Raf (B): Thumbs
Down is niet meer. Met deze 'Motion' hebben ze, zo
blijkt toch wel vrij verrassend, hun laatste plaat
gemaakt. Deze band is/was een naam in de hardcore-scenes
around. Deze sympathieke, ik zou zelfs durven zeggen,
extreem-sympathieke gasten uit Antwerpen - okay, I
know - hebben cruciale hardcore-platen gemaakt, vette
shows gespeeld en grote tours gedaan oa met Sick of
it all en 28 days. In 1996 begonnen Thumbs Down aan
hun quest for gold, een vijftal schijfjes later en
een shitload unieke ervaringen rijker mogen ze zeggen
dat ze toch iets betekend hebben. Maar nu is het tijd
om het te hebben over hun waardige afsluiter 'Motion'.
De maxicd is goed gepolijst, pokkemelodieus en toch
krachtig as a hardcore bat outta hell. Het furieuze
'Breaking up', het pakkende 'Familiy Ties', 'Stupid
girl', 'Sometimes' en Stevens eigen lijfspreuk 'Outdoor
Shoes Aren't Indoor Shoes', stuk voor stuk zijn het
songs die er staan, melodic oldschool zoals het moet.
Het blazoen blinkt, het afscheid is genomen, nog eens
bedankt voor het interview en spijtig dat het nooit
gepubliceerd kon worden. Rock on gasten!
Les Allcores Zine (B):
Thumbs Down est un des meilleurs ambasadeurs belges
du hardcore mèlodique. Ce coup-ci, c'est sur
le label brugeois Eye Spy qu'ils sortent ce mini-cd.
En l'espace de 5 titres, le groupe nous prouve qu'il
progresse au travers de compositions bien ficelées
comme "Sometimes" et "Familiy lies"
dont les lyriques hard traitent des relations familiales.
Court mais hautement intéressant!
Fracture (UK): The
last time I heared of this guys was when they were
on Genet and played moshy youth crew inspired hardcore.
While they still retain elements of that, they've
matured and moved to greener pastures. They've now
got a fuller sound, taking elements of Ensign and
and marinating them with mid 80's Dischord sound of
Dag Nasty, it's a beautiful and explosive mix. Add
to that some personal lyrics and you'll be giving
thumbs up for Thumbs Down
