We really don't like to explain the way
we sound, but if you really want to have
an idea: think westcoast punkrock mixed
with emo influences. The band really doesn't
want to pin down on one style of music
and the style will be constantly changing,
that's why it's so hard! But here's the
story: 1993... Roadkill... Flatcat was
born! Brothers Dirk & Wim had to do
something to stand up against those jocks
in highschool, so they decided to form
a band. Not really knowing what style
to go, they covered Exploited, Sex pistols,
DRI and Nirvana and well... they tried
to make songs that sounded like those
covers.
1994... That's where the magic kicked
in! Dirk was hitch hiking home from a
festival and Alex picked him up and learned
Dirk all about westcoast punkrock. He
liked it so much he decided to keep spreading
the word. Being Minx' leader in a youth
movement, he tought little Minx all about
Bad Religion, Sperm Birds, NOFX, Ten Foot
Pole, ... and another person was converted!
1995... Minx joined the band as second
guitarplayer and started writing songs
to record a demo and some months later
Alex joined the band too. In 1996 Flatcat
recorded their first demotape and appeared
on the Best of Belgium vol. 1 compilation
cd on Green Leaf Records. The band had
6 members and natural selection left 4
dedicated members who are working harder
than ever to be and stay one of Belgium's
leading punkrock acts. Flatcat didn't
want to rush anything, so they decided
just to go with the flow, recording some
demo's, playing shows with Heideroosjes,
Pridebowl, Turtlehead and almost every
Belgian punkrockband.
At the end of 2000, that's where the
ball started rolling! They got the chance
to play Belgian support for Vandals and
the Ataris, and also for Satanic Surfers
and All System Go! As if this wasn't enough,
Janez Detd asked them to contribute a
song to their single on Virgin Records,
followed by an offer by the Brazilian
label Highlight Sounds to appear on a
split cd with Reset and Belvedere from
Canada, who already earned their name
touring with Bad Religion, Strung Out
and they already did some shows on the
warped tour! To promote that split cd
they got the chance to do a small promotional
tour (5 shows) in Brazil in January of
2001. The band really liked Highlight
Sounds and their professional approach,
for they organised South-American tours
for Lagwagon, Down by law, No fun at all,
Shelter and Agnostic Front! Knowing that
Highlight Sounds is the leading punkrocklabel
in South-America, (licensing lots of Burning
Heart releases like Samiam, Refused, International
Noise Conspiracy they didnt have to think
long to sign the label.
The debut cd "Better Luck Next Time"
was recorded in December of that year.
Flatcat wanted to tour Brazil a second
time in March 2002 so Highlight released
the cd just one week before. The second
tour: 15 shows in 17 days, 3 TV-interviews,
recording a videoclip and a 1 hour Flatcat
special on Brazil's 2nd largest radiostation
built them a hugefanbase over there. (Shows
with 700 and 1200 visitors are the ultimate
proof!) Back in Belgium several labels
were eager to release the European version,
and after some talking Flatcat decided
to release the debut CD on a very young
but promising recordlabel called Eye Spy
Records. To make sure everything works
smoothly, Flatcat gets help from Greenleaf
Records/Goodlife distribution. The presentation
of this CD was at Groezrock where Flatcat
shared the stage with international acts
like Bad Religion, Sick of it all, Down
by law, Rise against, Guttermouth, Satanic
Surfers, Horace Pinker, The Line and Kill
your idols. If you take note of the progress
the band made over the years, the future's
looking fuckin' bright!!!!
